Two men linked to violent cult activities and armed robbery in Akwa Ibom State have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the State High Court sitting in Uyo.
The convicts, John Pedro Johnson and Ansa Effiong Edem, were found guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery and cultism following their prosecution over criminal incidents that occurred between 2022 and 2023.
Justice Nsemeke Daniel delivered the judgment in suit number HU/128C/2024, bringing the High Court trial to a conclusion.
How the Criminal Activities Unfolded
According to details of the case reported by LEADERSHIP, the two men were involved in a series of attacks that left residents of Uyo and neighbouring communities facing threats to their safety.
The incidents, which occurred over a two-year period, involved armed robberies, physical assaults and injuries to victims.
The case eventually reached the Akwa Ibom State High Court, where both defendants faced charges relating to their alleged involvement in the criminal activities.
Court Hands Down Multiple Prison Sentences
The trial was initially handled by Justice Gabriel Ette before the matter was reassigned to Justice Nsemeke Daniel following Ette’s transfer to another judicial jurisdiction.
Proceedings continued before Justice Daniel in 2025.
After considering the case, the court convicted both defendants on three counts and imposed separate prison terms.
Each man received five years’ imprisonment for conspiracy, seven years for cultism and life imprisonment for armed robbery.
Justice Daniel further directed that the shorter prison terms be absorbed into the life sentences, making life imprisonment the effective punishment for both convicts.
The ruling concludes the proceedings at the High Court level in a case involving violent criminal activities within the Akwa Ibom State capital and its surrounding communities.
