Godswill Akpabio United secured an impressive 1-0 victory over Akwa United in a pre-season derby at the Uyo Township Stadium, boosting confidence ahead of the 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) season.
The closely contested encounter, played on Tuesday, October 13, saw Godswill Akpabio United overcome their more established city rivals through a first-half goal from striker Selim Aliu.
Aliu found the back of the net in the 26th minute, giving his side a lead they successfully defended until the final whistle.
The result came as a surprise to many supporters, with Akwa United widely considered favourites heading into the encounter.
Godswill Akpabio United Celebrate Derby Victory
The win represents a significant improvement for Godswill Akpabio United, who failed to defeat Akwa United in their two league meetings last season.
During those encounters, Akpabio United suffered one defeat and managed a draw in the other fixture.
Team captain Kamoru Ogunjobi welcomed the victory, describing the contest as challenging while expressing satisfaction with his teammates’ determination.
According to Ogunjobi, the performance demonstrated that reputation alone does not determine results in football.
He believes the victory will strengthen the team’s confidence as preparations continue for the new NNL campaign.
Akwa United Remain Focused Despite Defeat
Despite losing the derby, Akwa United chairman Joseph Eno maintained that the result would not distract the club from its preparations for the upcoming league season.
Eno indicated that the encounter formed part of the team’s pre-season activities, with attention remaining on improving performances and developing a competitive squad.
For Akwa United, who previously competed at the highest level of Nigerian club football, the priority is to build a team capable of delivering consistent results throughout the new campaign.
Coach Edward Green Identifies Areas for Improvement
Godswill Akpabio United head coach Edward Green praised his players for their response against their city rivals but insisted there was still work to be done.
Green identified midfield control, goalscoring opportunities and finishing as important areas requiring further attention before the league begins.
The coach also emphasised teamwork, commitment and tactical discipline, explaining that every player must contribute to the team’s overall performance.
Although pleased with the derby result, Green believes improving attacking efficiency will be essential if his side hopes to compete successfully throughout the season.
Akpabio United Target NPFL Promotion in 2027
Beyond the pre-season victory, Godswill Akpabio United have set their sights on a more ambitious objective: gaining promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) in 2027.
Green has expressed his determination to guide the club into Nigeria’s top division, making the forthcoming NNL season an important campaign for the team.
Godswill Akpabio United are scheduled to begin their league campaign on November 7, 2026, with an away fixture against Stormers SC in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The coaching staff will be hoping the confidence gained from defeating Akwa United translates into positive results when competitive league action begins.
For now, the derby victory provides an encouraging sign for Akpabio United supporters as the club prepares for the challenges ahead.
